ROAD TO SKYFALL
Fascination 007

Skyfall: Do you remember the scene where Bond after his escape from London gets with M out of his DB5 and looks over his Scottish homeland for the first time in years? Exactly that place, the Valley Glen Etive, was our destination. Full of anticipation for the new bond strip, which was supposed to come to the cinemas in April.

„Uns“: “Us” means: My son (built 2003) and I (built 1974) – two generations of Bond fans. In our luggage: An Aston Martin DB5 (built 1963) and DB10 (built 2014) – two generations of legendary Bond Cars, of course only as a model (sniff).

The result? A picture story including a shortcut, which tells of a father-son trip on “our” Road to Skyfall to the vastness of Scotland – spiced with the spirit of James Bond 007, a truly cross-generational legend.

Somehow a kind of consolation for all those who now would like to sit in the cinema as much as we do.

Have fun!

P.S. Bond’s estate “Skyfall” was in the movie not far away from Glen Etive. In reality it was built in the south of England just for the shooting.

„Leaving the city“, Edinburgh, Nelson’s Monument

[27.12.2019, 17:48, N 55° 57‘ W 3° 10‘]

Bond started his escape to Scotland in London, we started our trip in Edinburgh. Granted: It took me some (some!) effort to unpack the model cars here, in the midst of all the tourists, and start taking pictures. But when I saw a Japanese woman dressed up as a bride climbing the wall of the museum in the pouring rain, I thought I was in tolerant company and kept going.

„Remember Goldfinger“, Edinburgh

[27.12.2019, 20:05, N 55° 57° W 3° 11‘]

In the evening we suddenly found ourselves in this old town street not far from the hotel. We put the model car on the (of course!) rainy sidewalk, in the back a real one rolled up. Ready was the homage to a similar chase scene with the DB 5 in the movie “Goldfinger”. By the way: We can’t get rid of the feeling that also the Skyfall scenes around the beginning of Bond’s escape with M from London (shortly after the garage in the old town) are in style and effect a kind of an homage to the same Goldfinger scene. Maybe you know more about it?

„Two worlds“, Glen Coe

Like a scalpel, the modern, clean DB 10 (Spectre) cuts through the typical landscape of the Scottish Highlands.

„Speed“, Glen Coe

Bond’s relationship to cars is well known – they usually don’t last long. Shortly after this speed scene on a scottish highway our DB 10 crashed. The outside mirror broke and we could only take pictures of it from certain perspectives. By the way, the light for our shots didn’t come from a flash because of the better controllability, but from a total of three LED lights, which we positioned accordingly mobile. This can be seen briefly in the clip at the beginning. It’s good that there were always two of us.

One of the aims of our father-son photo trip was to emphasize the intergenerational connection of the Bond saga. So the old and new Aston Martin meet here at a lake, not far from the Road to Skyfall. Can you hear them bitching about Bond’s driving?

Finally at the destination of our journey. The valley where Bond in the movie Skyfall gets out of his DB 5 after a long escape from London and after years of absence he takes a first look at his home. Our re-enacted photo with the DB 5 model comes surprisingly close to the film scene, which was probably due to the prevailing “light and cloud happiness”. Bond’s Aston Martin stood in the grass of the side strip about one meter to the right of the model. In order to achieve a similar spatial effect as in the film, we had to raise our DB 5 slightly. It wasn’t easy to find the right spot on the set. In the end it turned out to be a smooth rock, which I think you can see a little bit. A real patience game: All the other Bondfans, who – in the middle of nowhere and in Scottish weather – posed for selfies at the same place forever and constantly ran through our lens. I will also not forget the otherwise quite nice couple, who embellished the street in the background of the picture for more than half an hour with their white camper van, until they finally moved on. In the end we went to this place twice to be successful.

„At home“, Ballachulish

[29.12.2019, 18:12, N 56° 40‘ W 5° 9‘]

The DB 5 in front of a building – the church of St. John near Ballachulish – which in its effect spontaneously reminded us of the “real” Bond estate Skyfall, in front of which 007 parks his car after his escape. In order to integrate our model as realistically as possible into the real world in terms of size, our DB 5 stands on the bentonite post of the church entrance.

The complete casting crew gathered again on the set of the Road to Skyfall. To be more variable, we had the DB 5 and DB 10 in 1:36 and 1:43 scale, as well as in different paint shades. The smaller models proved to be more suitable for our purposes. With the large ones, for example, the gap of the opening doors caught our eye. Also a learning: The photos should not be shown too large. The smaller, the more realistic.

See you soon next year!

Was dabei an #Brandmarketing-Projekten
Endlich! Die Edition 01 von PLANET P. ist da, dem Magazin mit spannenden Geschichten aus unserer Welt. Über Menschen, die ihren Traum leben und dabei ausgetretene Pfade verlassen - #normalroutenverlasser, wie wir.

Willkommen also, auf unserem Planeten. Ach ja: Zum Gratis-Abo, siehe Link in Bio ☝️😉
